As a fellow artist, I really related to this insider's peek into the NY art world and to the protagonist's struggle with finding her own path towards expression. Sometimes a bit dour, and I didn't necessarily like the protagonist, but I read it like a storm and will reread it again I am sure. Anyone interested or involved in the arts will enjoy this contemporary view into this complex and often hidden world. Recommend it.Tags : The American Painter Emma Dial: A Novel [Samantha Peale] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. “A racy, muscular, enlightening beauty of a novel.” ―James McManus Emma Dial is a virtuoso painter who executes the works of Michael Freiburg,Samantha Peale,The American Painter Emma Dial: A Novel,W. The American Painter Emma Dial A Novel Samantha Peale 9780393068207 Books Reviews
It's not much of a story. Here's the plot Emma Dial was a very promising art student who is growing old while making a good living as a studio assistant for a famous artist. The good living keeps her from making her own art. Her creative juice is nourishing her boss' reputation, not her own. That's about the sum total of the plot. What artist / writer / sculptor / playwrite do we know that's not been in that situation?
This was a tough read because I wanted to just reach through the book, take Emma by the shoulders, and shake her initiative into action. I realized along the way that my own resolve needs a good shaking.
This book makes the reader see in themselves their wasted, suppressed, overwhelmed, underdeveloped creative lives and can maybe give a new spark to them. If you are a creative person whose creativity is mired in mundane tasks and economic practicalities, read this book! You will see yourself; you will examine yourself; your impatience with Emma may translate into action to meet your own creative needs.
Samantha Peale has a wonderfully bright and descriptive, unique style. She literally paints with words. I "knew" Emma and was a spy into her lifestyle. The 1st 2/3rd of the book was particularly engrossing... Emma's life in NYC, the scenes, the people, I loved how Samantha did not spoon feed the relationships. They were sort of a puzzle and then explained as you got more into the story. For that reason, the element of surprise, I am not going to tell the plot because I think the discovery of Emma unfolding without knowing the story will make it better. Just read it and sink into Emma's life.
While reading, I had moments of visualizing the painter played by Alan Bates in Unmarried Woman and some hints of Camille Claudel -in a modern fresh style. If you liked either of those movies, read this book.
Emma is one of the quirky artsy outsiders we all have read or seen in movies ( Juno, for example) but she captivated my heart because of the way she looked at the world, the way she had such deep passions and insight, but was human and afraid. This is what made the story great, because it touched the reality of how so many people feel about their lives; and about the way life can get in the way of being who we are really meant to be.
Thank you Samantha Peale, this book opened my eyes as an artists eyes have to be.
While I found it interesting that this women,Emma, painted another "artists" work instead of creating her own. I grew tired of her very quickly as well as her "friends". Emma bounces around from place to place and never stays anywhere long enough for me to care what she's doing. The only place she stays too long is in a bad relationship and a spiritually dead job. I could only finish half of this book because I just didn't care anymore what she did with her life.
This book is about a woman claiming her own creative space in the world. Great for women and painters, New York scene, interesting.
This book was extremely inspiring to me as an artist. Excellent fiction, sure, but compelling and reminded me that your dream can slip away if neglected.
You will especially enjoy this book if you are a painter as well!
What a fabulous read! Samantha Peale writes with energy and zeal that evoke the visual sensuousness of the paintings her heroine executes, and the sheer drama of her soul-searching and ultimate self-discovery. Exhilarating passages emerge from stylistically stunning language, stacatto and fluid, like geat brushwork. This book is a work of great craft that captures in its subject the tumult of human creativity and talent. Along the way, it is pure fun, describing (painting?) scenes of artworld parties and bohemian lifestyles with such richness and revelation that the reader recalls the rooms. Thrilling. Could not put it down.
