This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read, both for its strong spare language and the story of how it came to be. Largely autobiographical, it is the story of a young orphan girl in the late nineteenth century raised in an orphanage in central France and sent to be a farm worker and shepherdess at about age fourteen. I do not want to say more about the plot, but the author fled to Paris in her late teens and survived by working as a laundrywoman and seamstress. She wrote the manuscript which she kept hidden. Under very unusual circumstances, she became connected with a group of writers, one of whom discovered her manuscript. He convinced her to have it published and it won the Prix Femina, the Prix Goncourt being closed to women at the time. Though over a hundred years removed from the time of its publication, this book is extremely moving and its emotional resonance absolutely current.Product details
