He hid the old pencil-drawn map for 40 years.
The guards never found it.
After 40 years in San Quentin, Luke Palmer leaves with a state-issued suit, $100 dollars to buy a bus ticket, and a map that will lead to a promise and into the heart of a dark forest.
"The Butterfly Forest is a high-octane thriller that is part mystery, part love story, and full bore great storytelling that you'll think about days after you've left the woods."
- John Davenport (Orlando, FL)
College graduate student Molly Monroe is about to release rare butterflies not far from where the FBI used 4,000 bullets in a shootout to kill Ma Barker and one of her gangster sons in 1935. Molly snaps a picture that will frame something she never sees coming.
Sean O'Brien does see something -- a predator. Between the sea of cars in a Walmart parking lot. Walking quickly. Stalking two women.
As O’Brien tries to prevent the abduction, he opens the door to a new relationship. And he opens a dark door to a horror that is secluded within the forest. He follows veiled tracks that lead him farther into the woods where an evil from the past intersects with a frightening presence to form a volatile trap with only one way out.
"ABSOLUTELY MESMERIZING!!!!!"
- Anthony B. Thomas (Louisville, KY)
"If you like the works of writers like Lee Child, Robert Crais, James Lee Burke and Michael Connelly, you'll enjoy Tom Lowe's THE BUTTERFLY FOREST."
- Aaron Winters (Miami, FL)

A really terrific series. Each story builds our connections with the regular cast of characters. Lowe has a superb style of writing....descriptive with minimal words....enough to see and smell each scene. I have no problem feeling familiar with the surroundings described and can picture life along the river, the marina, or the forest. As always O'Brien finds himself emerged in a case accidentally. In this case, his act of being a good Samaritan is just like the saying "no good deed goes unpublished" This case is dark and twisted...and the suspense builds and builds. The author resolved everything which is awesome as the reader. I won't give away the plot but there's murder, butterflies, fairies, drugs, wild ferns and Ma Barker. You gotta read it to see how it all fits together!Product details

The Butterfly Forest Sean O'Brien Book 3 edition by Tom Lowe Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Mr. Lowe writes an entertaining story of extremes - mostly stock, one dimensional characters who are either really good guys or really bad, although there are a few typical well-meaning but bumbling law enforcement types. Female characters are sweet but needy. Editing isn't perfect but as e-books go is actually good. The story is about a man (formerly both military and cop) taking on a Mexican drug cartel growing large groves of marijuana in the Ocala National Forest. The most enjoyable part of the book for me was reading about familiar areas Ocala area, Deltona, Ponce Inlet and the lighthouse and marina area, Sanford, Daytona, Cabbage Key and Cayo Costa and other areas in central and south Florida.
I do not know how you do it! I start the book......the story starts moving and next thing I know I feel like I am going 200mph trying to win a race! In and among the intensity of the story, I end up worrying about Sean's health! His life ends up getting very close to danger a lot! Plus, the main creep in the story throws down that challenge that Sean should have let him drown. So, now I worry that Sean will have to deal with him again in the future! And yet, as I near the end of the book, I order the next one! I am hooked!
I've had this sitting in my app for months and finally decided to start reading it the other day. All I can say is I'm glad I got it for free.
The characters are one dimensional and the main character seems to be 'Mr. Perfect' with all the right answers milli-seconds upon encountering a person, place or thing. I'm on location 5565 out of 6300 and have plodded along just to see if perhaps the book might have some redeeming value.
The storyline is good but the execution...well to me is lacking. It reminds me of a Rambo or Steven Seigal type of movie. You might like that genre, but I don't.
There is no such thing as one man having ALL the answers ALL the time. Combine that with the one dimensional aspect and I give just had to give it one star.
I have never been to Florida, but for the few hours it took me to read this great book. I often found descriptions boring, but this was not the case this time.
Being at the right or wrong place at a given time can influence the rest of your life. Money is as always the root of all evil and is also the motivation behind the murders. This lead to cover ups and revenge.
I felt sorry for Luke who has just been released from prison, he deserved better than what he got.
This story changed the way I look at butterflies for ever.
(I have the feeling I have read something very similar before)
Author Tom Lowe has magical, mystical powers of description. Not too long, not verbose, just haunting and evocative.
He also managed to include totally unnecessary passages that caused the action to drag; whole chapters could have been skipped (alligator, for instance) and the plot tightened up considerably.
Three POVs moving along independently until about 25-33% of the book, where they converged into a coherent, interrelated plot.
Some errors of grammar and use of homonyms, some clunky sentences, especially in the central portion of the book, as though maybe there had been chapters inserted and not proofed carefully? The errors, however, were not pervasive so as to ruin the book.
Nicely crafted main character; I want to read more with Sean O'Brien as the pivotal figure. I did not care for the stereotypical, cardboard cutout native american shaman/tracker character.
Ending...just...sort...of...happened. Weak, and a let-down after an excellent plot.
DAY 1 Generally if I enjoy an author's work the first go around I'll like their other ebooks as well, but for only the second time ever I find I'm not enjoying this one as much as I did as prior work. "Butterfly Forest" doesn't have the interesting historical backdrop as did "Black Bullet", instead we're given an ex-con eating bologna while searching for a deceased bank robber's buried treasure. Is it just me or does discovering a sunken Nazi u-boat have a lot more going for it than rainbow hippie people, pagan rituals, or college kids releasing butterflies in a natural habitat? DAY 2 I'm nearing the halfway point and while there are some murders for the protagonist (and the ever cute Max the dog if that's your thing) to solve once again, I'm really hoping this all starts to come together soon before I loose my interest (am hoping this is not the case as I still have "False Dawn" by the same author to read, too.) DAY 3 Ahh...at the two-thirds mark now and the ever popular drug cartels are going to be the end all. I'll probably finish it but will not be a keeper for me at this rate. DAY 4 Finished it finally, but wow, was pretty bad overall (only skimmed the final two chapters). Gonna leave it at three stars for now out of deference for "Black Bullet" (was far better in my opinion) but if "False Dawn" doesn't deliver in good fashion then I'll just stop reading it and reduce "Butterfly Forest" to two stars. Already deleted this book from my library - sorry, Tom.
