Valor The Faithful and the Fallen Book 2 edition by John Gwynne Literature Fiction eBooks
This is a series review, as I read the books a while ago, and I see them as one story anyway. I had a little trouble getting into Malice (book 1). It seemed a little slow in the beginning. But I liked the writing, and felt a good story was underway. I was right. These books are not ultra-high end, Lord of the Rings type books which are studied and taught in literature classes. But of course not all books need to be EPIC MASTERPIECES FOR THE AGES! The stories are very good. Some reviewers have mentioned that the characters are derivative. It seems like that at first, but they do grow into very unique characters I cared about. There are some stock plot lines, which are tough to avoid (try to think up a story in your head - chances are it's been written many times). But as with the characters, they find their own voices pretty quickly. Beyond anything else, I can say that I simply enjoyed reading the books, and looked forward to reading them, and I'll read them again.I think people overlook that element far too frequently in reviews, instead choosing to hyper focus on the details. The stories in the books are exciting adventures, occurring in great Fantasy locations: castles, dungeons, deep forests, mountains, swamps etc. The writing is convincing and the world building is solid. The descriptions of the locations are very deftly written, in my humble opinion. I'd like to visit the world, but in quieter times. There are animal companions. Dogs wolves and ravens. I know..."Really, another wolf / raven / dog companion?" I've read a fair view animal companion books. But I love animals, and I love the human / animal bond found both in literature and life. I personally feel that it is more natural to have animal companion(s) that to not. Most of your friends and family have animal companions (I don't care for the word pet), don't they? If you like fantasy, give Malice a shot, and stick with it a bit. You will be pleasantly surprised. Great conflict, gray characters, and a few who don't know they are gray. The action picks up soon, and really doesn't lag. You can read all about the details in other reviews. Lastly, John Gwynne is a nice man. That matters to me. "Like" him on Facebook and ask him a question (sorry John, you are a busy man!). He'll answer. And he's a pretty quick writer. The fourth book of the series is done, and I believe he's just completed book 1 of a new series, which I'll read. That's a $10 check (after the publisher's cut) you can cash right now, John.Postscript: G I A N T S. And plenty of them. Smashing, stomping G I A N T S!

Valor The Faithful and the Fallen Book 2 edition by John Gwynne Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The first book in the series had a rough first half and picked up at the end. The second book puts this on a rare must read fantasy series list. If you enjoyed the first book at all, it is with picking up the second (and now on to the third).
I'm re-reading these books before I purchase the last book in the series. This is one of the less than handful of series that I can say that about. These books just have everything you could want in a fantasy series. If you haven't read these books and you're like me, stop reading reviews and just get these books. You will not be disappointed .
Expensive but definitely a quality, full-length book.
Builds and develops the original. There is good progress across the board for characters and story-line although from the size of it i think i may be more than a trilogy.
I eagerly await the next installment and the answers to some burning questions.
The only thing to keep in mind is that you may wish to have a character list with you if its been a few months since you read book 1. After a few chapters i was back into the flow though.
This book continues the story started in the book Malice. The story is just as much of a "page turner" as the first book, with a fairly complex plot, lots of action, and graphic violence. The characters and settings are pretty well realized. I gave it 3 stars instead of 4 because the writing is good, but not great. But, I'm in for all four books, so judge from that.
I just read this for the 2nd time as I'm finally able to read books 2 & 3.
Normally, I have to take breaks between books in a series. Not with this one. Well developed characters, plots and sub-plots, fantastic imagery, amazing battles and, GIANTS!I
Now on to book 3!!
Move over George R.R. Martin. That says it all right there. John Gwynne's "Valor", book two of his "The Faithful and The Fallen" series, is an absolutely tremendous follow up to it's predecessor "Malice". This series should be on every fantasy readers "read" shelf. If it's marked "to read" put whatever you are reading down and read this. If you haven't read "Malice", start there. Now, on to the review.
"Valour" picks up right where "Malice" left off. There is a war across The Banished Lands. Asroth seeks the destruction of all that Elyon has created. Chaos reigns and reading about it is a most enjoyable endeavor.
John Gwynne is crafting a fine tale. On par with the best fantasy writers of today. Every page feels like something big is going to be on it. The series is filled with vibrant and vivid characters, and John makes each on feel equally important and valid, and the action in "Valour" is an unbelievably gory, wondrous affair.
Simply put, "Valour" is a near perfect "book two". Following up "Malice" with more than just filler material to progress the story. Difficult to put down is an understatement. Read it. Don't miss this series.
