I have always been a fan of T Jefferson Parker. I love his police procedurals and his very fine Charlie Hood thrillers. As strong and wonderful as his previous books are, FULL MEASURE marks a beautiful departure--while retaining so much of what makes this author great. I was touched by the inevitable tragedy at the heart of this story.
So many questions arose. About who you are, where you came from, how much is nature and how much is nurture. As always, T. Jefferson Parker's prose is pitch-perfect, the family dynamics pull you this way and that, and the characters are fully realized. They could be real people come to life in a book.
There was tension in every line. You never knew which way it was going to go. Last night as I read I could feel my whole body tightening up. THAT's writing!
This book explores the line between good and evil. Maybe the center is indifference. Or a lack of vigilance? Maybe it's just not wanting to see what's right in front of you and hoping for the best. We all do that. Most of us go along and put off unpleasantness and keep doing what we're doing.
As a hopeful person, I treasured a moment where Pat makes something right. Not sullenly, not because he feels compelled to, because somewhere along the line he learned the right lessons. It was a moment of grace. My takeaway is no matter what is thrown at you, no matter the circumstances, you pretty much are who you are. Redemption is hard-won.
I'm so glad T. Jefferson Parker wrote this book.

I enjoyed this book as being different from the other TJ Parker books I read so far... Quite a human story about people fighting their own struggles. A returning veteran, a farmer at the brink of loss and a brother who had many cards dealt against him... A good story set in Fallbrook... So Cal readers will enjoy the familiar surroundings...
I was looking forward to reading this novel because the story was centered around the town of Fallbrook, CA., however, it was the most uninteresting plot line I have ever experienced. The story was just painful to read that took a lot of effort to finish. Parker is a much better author than what was exhibited in this novel. I don't know what happens to authors as they mature, but they seem to lose their creative writing style.
Having followed TJP from the beginning and love every book. As an OC guy I was always waiting for the next one. No more, gave up after 100 pages. All I can say is boring
I have been a big fan of T.Jefferson Parker for many years. I eagerly purchase every new release of his work. However, this one can hardly be called compelling, and is not the riveting story-telling found with every other TJP book. I nearly tossed it asid but powered through it. I applaud the author's treatment of the emotional stresses on veterans as they assimilate back into daily life upon their return from war-zone service. I also have a newfound appreciation for the challenges faced by avocado growers in a tough economy. My improved social awareness may be the only redeeming quality to this book. As a whodunit, it misses the target.
What self important, ham handed, drivel. I have somewhat enjoyed the Hood series but Full Measure accentuates Parker's weaknesses which are many. I am done. Out!
I am so fortunate to have had a son deployed to Iraq but in a supply capacity. Not in the frontline battles. I feel this story is a more real representation of how a returning soldier might feel than the others I have read. It is a very deep story. Not only about how Patrick returns from a terrible war but about the mental illness that can lie in dormancy until given the trigger to ignite. I am going to think more whenever I want to applaud and thank a soldier. It might be better to just give them a warm smile and let them go about their life than to call attention to them by congratulating them for something that is probably a very bad and confusing memory. I did like the book but was not prepared for this turn from the usual T. Jefferson Parker effort. I really give it more than 4 but less than 5.
You couldn't find a bigger fan of Parker than I am - I go clear back to Laguna Heat and have read every word this man has written for public consumption. But I had such problems buying the vampire priest. I understand that such detours are sometimes necessary to broaden the reader base, but I stopped reading him after I finished the first Charlie Hood. Now, I'm delighted to say, he's come back with something worthy of the original talent - his special talent - for mining the depths of ordinary human characters and giving us a rich, nuanced, believable story with people we really care about. I used to laugh and say that Jeff Parker 'wrote like a girl' - that is, emotionally, with a sweet sensibility. I consider that a great achievement in a male author. When I finish a story I want to be wrung out, saturated with the lives I've just visited, and Parker always did that. From the first paragraph of his that I read, I knew this was an incredibly intuitive writer; I told all of my friends to read him and couldn't wait for the next book. So I'm thrilled that we're out of the fantasy world and back to the mundane - a place he makes perfectly fascinating, without gimmicks. It was also a treat to read one so ornately Fallbrook, a place I'm familiar with. So if you've felt as I do, this novel is a must for your library. You won't be disappointed.
